Death in a Cell at Grand Rapids.
P. J. Matthews, of Auburn, N. Y., recently in the employ of H. G. Thornton, maker of files there, as a traveling agent, a man of about 50 years of age, was arrested on Tuesday, in Grand Rapids, on a charge of complicity in the robbery of Hugh Ross in a saloon the night before, when Ross lost about $800. Matthews had been very drunk most of the time for several days. When arrested he was quite stupid from intoxication. Yesterday morning he died in his cell at the jail of congestion of the brain, induced by his intemperance, according to the finding of the coroner’s jury. His wife and family now live in Auburn.
